Throsby Creek Retreat Airbnb
Last week Ecoshack.com got in touch to chat about my approach to sustainability in styling and interiors, and recently completed Throsby Creek Retreat project done in collaboration with the lovely owners and hosts Denise and John. Built from 5 repurposed shipping containers (originally designed by local architect Murray James Design and with 90% of the decor vintage or salvaged, this unique Airbnb is located right on Throsby Creek Tighes Hill (Newcastle NSW.) The client, Denise, came to me during Covid lockdown with the idea to create a retreat style Airbnb in the existing shipping container home but she was struggling to pull it all together and wasn’t quite sure how to make it all work. One of the most popular services I offer at Ramble Interiors is a 90 minute initial consultation service to help clients bounce ideas around as well as work out a plan of attack and a design direction. We did this via Zoom due to being in lockdown at the time (I was able to inspect the property solo prior to this) and I prepared a mood board and ran through the look/feel and vibe I felt would work within the space. The client had some artwork in her collection that she wanted to find homes for, she had already purchased the leather lounge and armchair on Facebook Marketplace and the home itself has some really industrial and eclectic elements so I chose to draw on this.
From the outset we were very particular about following our combined values of sustainability, resourcefulness and uniqueness. Just about everything was found locally on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or the owners collection and a few pieces were from Lunatiques in Sydney. Once Denise had a clear design direction she was able to do a lot of the sourcing by following the design guide I originally put together, but lockdowns made it very difficult! Once she had most of the pieces I went and styled the space and made sense of the jumble of items she’d collected. It turned out to be a beautiful mix of pieces with a common thread, and has the layered, eclectic, industrial vibe we set out to achieve.
The location is amazing as it overlooks beautiful Throsby Creek and you can launch a kayak straight out the front!
